Homelessness in New Mexico
“One out of every 50 – or approximately 1.5 million – American children go to sleep without a home of their own each year.” – National Center on Family Homelessness
Key Facts about New Mexico’s Children and Families Experiencing Homelessness
According to the Albuquerque 2007 Point in Time Homeless Count, nearly 500 people were identified as being members of the city’s approximately 150 families experiencing homelessness. This survey was conducted on a single night in January 2007 through agencies that provide services to people experiencing homelessness.
In these difficult economic times, the number of homeless children and families is rising dramatically. Albuquerque Public Schools has seen the number of homeless children enrolled double from approximately 2,000 in March 2008 to nearly 4,300 in March 2009, according to a report by KOB News.
As a whole, New Mexico ranks 47th in child homelessness across the 50 states. This ranking was released by the National Center on Family Homelessness in their March 2009 report entitled “America’s Youngest Outcasts.” Nearly 9,000 New Mexican children will experience homelessness in 2009. Homeless children are more likely to have moderate to severe health issues, difficulties in school, and emotional disturbances.
