Cuidando los Niños is inviting neighborhood residents, service providers, community and faith-based organizations to a series of dialogues in three Albuquerque neighborhoods: Southeast Heights, South Valley and the Central City. The goal is to create action plans that will address and end child and family homelessness in our communities.

Southeast Heights, South Broadway/Downtown, and the South Valley – three neighborhoods in Albuquerque that are very different, yet share one sobering distinction. These neighborhoods have the highest concentrations in the city of families with very young children who are experiencing homelessness.

Thanks to a grant from Everyday Democracy,* Cuidando los Niños will organize and facilitate a series of community dialogues this fall in these three neighborhoods. Families, staff from neighborhood organizations, faith-based entities, and concerned residents will come together, learn more about child and family homelessness, and create action plans to address and end child homelessness in our communities.

Each dialogue will bring participants together for five sessions, culminating in an action plan to help ensure that the neighborhood’s children and families, especially those experiencing homelessness or who are at risk of becoming homeless, will receive the support they need to thrive. The information and recommendations generated by the community dialogues will help inform the statewide campaign to End Child Homelessness in New Mexico, including the report to the State Legislature, mandated by House Memorial 7.

If you are interested in learning more about these community dialogues, or to find out how you can participate in or support the dialogues, please contact Wendy Wintermute, New Mexico State Coordinator, at wendyw@clnkids.org or call 505-843 -6899.

*Everyday Democracy is a national organization that explores ways to help all kinds of people think, talk and work together to solve problems. Learn more at www.everyday-democracy.org. Generous funding for this initiative comes from the “Our Voices, Our Children” initiative of the W.K. Kellogg Foundation.

March 25-26, 2010

More than 1.5 million American children are homeless each year- one child in every 50. In New Mexico alone, there are approximately 9,000 homeless children annually. Cuidando Los Niños, with the New Mexico Campaign to End Child Homelessness, will galvanize public and political will to end this crisis, acting on the belief that it is unacceptable for any child in New Mexico to be homeless for even one day.

The goals of this first-ever Summit are to Increase public awareness of the scope and impact of homelessness on children, inform state policies to better address these needs, and improve program design and service delivery to meet the unique concerns of these children and families.

The 2010 New Mexico Summit to End Child Homelessness will launch these important efforts. On March 25 and 26, 2010, homeless service providers, children’s advocates, and state and elected officials will come together for the Summit, which marks the first time advocates statewide have gathered to specifically address the issues facing New Mexico’s most vulnerable population—homeless children.

Two hundred people are expected to attend this historic two-day event in Albuquerque. The Summit will include keynote speakers from the national and state level and panel discussions, with families who are formerly or currently experiencing homelessness. Several workshops presented by leaders and experts in the field will be offered to attendees.

The Summit will be held at the Indian Pueblo Cultural Center, and includes an evening reception with entertainment that is being hosted by the Cuidando Los Niños Board of Directors.

Registration fee for the 2 day Summit is $100.00. Please purchase your tickets in advance online from www.HomelessChildrenAmerica.org. For any questions, contact Corey.Beach@familyhomelessness.org. Hotel discounts from La Quinta Inn will be available for reservations made by March 10, 2010 (code: clnkids).

The New Mexico Campaign is a coalition of organizations that includes The National Center on Family Homelessness, Cuidando Los Niños, Albuquerque Health Care for the Homeless, Albuquerque Public Schools Title I Homeless Project, Center for Social Innovation, New Mexico Coalition to End Homelessness, New Mexico Voices for Children, and others.
